Preserving Privacy While Leveraging ChatGPT Tools at Work: A Comprehensive Guide

Chat with ChatGPT on Linux Made Simple: Your Comprehensive Tutorial
ChatGPT is available through a website that requires creating an account. That leaves some of us feeling uncomfortable. Do we want our every query tied to our identity? Others may simply find opening a web browser to be inconvenient.
If you are a privacy-conscious Linux user looking for a little convenience, it’s now possible to use ChatGPT from a native desktop app, with no account required. The app’s name is Bavarder.
What Is ChatGPT?
Okay, let’s back up. Maybe you aren’t yet familiar with ChatGPT. It’s a chatbot that you can communicate with by typing into a window in your web browser. You can raise questions or make requests, such asask ChatGPT what to watch next on Netflix orhave the chatbot help you with your job search .
ChatGPT is a type of artificial intelligence, and it’s available to use free of charge from OpenAI. In exchange, you must create an account and permit ChatGPT to log and learn from whatever you type.
ChatGPT’s intelligence comes from the large language model that it learns from. ChatGPT was originally based on OpenAI’s GPT 3.5 model, though this is no longer the newest version. GPT stands for “generative pre-trained transformer” and refers to this particular type of large language model.
What Is Bavarder?
Bavarder is an app that enables you to “chit-chat” with artificial intelligence. Bavarder is built specifically for GNOME,the most widely-used interface on Linux PCs . But Bavarder works on other desktop environments as well.
The name “Bavarder” is a French word referring to talking about things that don’t matter or having an informal conversation about things that are not important. This implies that you probably shouldn’t take the responses too seriously or turn to Bavarder for serious work.
Bavarder doesn’t actually utilize ChatGPT directly. Instead, Bavarder works with various language models that utilize the OpenAI API. Default providers include BAI Chat, CatGPT, OpenAI’s own GPT 3.5 Turbo, and others.
Some of the providers utilize the same learning models as ChatGPT, but that doesn’t mean you can expect them to generate the same results as ChatGPT would. But to the average person, BAI Chat probably comes off as close enough to the same thing.
How to Download Bavarder
Bavarder is available ina universal package format known as flatpak that works across most versions of Linux. You can download Bavarder from Flathub.

How to Use Bavarder on Linux
Like many GNOME apps, there isn’t much to see when you first open Bavarder. There is an input field labeled “Message” at the top and a second input field labeled “Response” at the bottom. You ask your question or give your command in the top field and Bavarder will give you the output in the bottom.
Each field has a copy button in the bottom right so that you can quickly send the text somewhere useful. Of course,Ctrl + C works as well.
You may need to configure sources to change the type or quality of the response. You can do this by clicking on the hamburger menu and selectingPreferences . To change the provider currently in use, selectProviders instead.
The app may seem to load for quite a while before providing a response. If you were to use BAI chat viachatbot.theb.ai in a browser, you would see your answer arrive a few words at a time as though the chatbot were typing.
Bavarder only delivers the answer all at once, so you have to wait for the AI to finish “thinking” rather than watch it think in real time.
Should You Use Bavarder on Linux?
There are ethical questions to wrestle with when using ChatGPT and similar chatbots. Do you trust one company collecting that much information? Are you concerned about putting people out of jobs? Do you think people should think creatively for themselves instead of outsourcing that task to machines?
If you land on the side of trusting this kind of software, then Bavarder is one of the easiest and quickest ways to make use of it. Though if you are more of a command-line person, there is a way to use ChatGPT from a terminal as well.
